Flourish Magazine
I am really pleased that the latest edition of Flourish Magazine, Volume 4 - “A snippet of Nature”, contains a piece I have written titled “Living Alongside Badgers - Waiting for the perfect opportunity” about my work photographing my local badgers. It is no secret that I have a real soft spot for these beautiful, sentient animals that I have spent many hours watching and photographing over the past years. The piece contains a selection of some of my favourite badger images, one of which has been used on the front cover of the magazine! Our badgers are having a tough time at the moment and the publication of this magazine has come at a time when they need our help.
Flourish is a Travel and Lifestyle publication focusing its content around outdoor living, nature, culture, sustainability and the search for a physical existence. Started by designer and photographer, Lucy Saunders, Flourish reflects her passion for travel, ecological adventures, exploring the natural world and documenting new places. The publication sits heavily around a photographic approach containing photo-essays, interviews, geographical statements and personal stories of adventure. Each volume is set around one place, continent, community, culture or location. Flourish is a publication which thrives off of the meaning of ‘to flourish’ itself; (of a living organism) grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly congenial environment.
Nature floods the pages within this special edition volume of Flourish, with individual focus on specific wildlife species such as beavers, and bats as well as badgers, before investigating the smaller pollinators which make up our ecology and keep the vegetation we survive on blossoming. The magazine discusses how people can do their bit within society to help the environment secure a brighter and greener future, in addition to looking at Made on a Hill who are creating a sustainable way of life through nature. The magazine talks with Lucy Lapwing and hears a conservationist’s view of the importance of nature, whilst Steph Robertson takes you on a trip through New Zealand to protect local species. At the heart of this volume of Flourish is a collection of hiking trips to the Faroe Islands and also a look at getting out into nature ourselves through wild camping and foraging. This volume has come together with the help and support of a host of photographers, illustrators, writers, and explorers who help Flourish’s community to keep flourishing, of which I am very pleased to be a part.
